GOLF: Surry ready for Tour push

TROWBRIDGE golfer Steve Surry is quietly confident he can fulfill his dream and make it onto the European Tour for the first time when he competes for a place in the final qualifying round in Spain this weekend.

The Cumberwell Park professional has had a memorable year with a debut appearance at the Open Championship - at which he was beating Tiger Woods by two shots after the first day - a current standing of fourth on the EuroPro tour and competing in several Challenge Tour events.

Now the 27-year-old is vying for a place on the prestigious European Tour 2010 to play with the likes of Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els.

Surry, who set himself the target of appearing on the tour by 2011, flew out to Spain on Monday ahead of the penultimate qualifying at the Hacienda Del Alamo course in Murica this weekend.

If he successfully makes the cut Surry will then play in the final qualifying round at PGA Golf de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain, between November 28 and December 3.

“Everyone would be chuffed to bits if I made it onto the tour,” he said.

“It’s what I’ve been working towards for ten years.

“I’ve had a really good year making the step up to the EuroPro and Challenge Tour but I would say playing the Open was the best experience so far.

“I played reasonably well at the Open and finished where I expected to so I’m not daunted by playing on a major tour like the PGA. I will just be about finding my feet and feeling confident.”

And the Trowbridge man feels his experience in the final qualifying round will hold him in good stead for the qualifying rounds ahead.

“It’s a pretty similar field to what I’m playing on in the Challenge Tour so if I play well I’ve got a great chance of going through.

“I would feel very comfortable if I get through to the final stages because it’s not new to me anymore.

“I never try to be over confident because I find that’s when things start to go wrong but I’m quietly confident.”
