Marlborough accordians pull out all stops

Kennet Accordion Orchestra had 12 wins, five seconds and three third places at the National Accordion Organisation Southern Area Festival in Wimborne, Dorset.

Under musical director David Watson, the adult orchestra won both advanced orchestra classes, as well as the open band class, in which the youth orchestra finished third.

Under Marilyn Mason the youth orchestra won the elementary orchestra class and, as two groups, finished first and second in the children’s open.

Adults Suzanne Webber and Helen Newton, won the advanced duet class, Helen beating Suzanne into second place in the open solo.

Simon Waterfall won the 16 and over beginners and Harry Lin the Doreen Merrifield Award for the young player with most potential and the under 11 beginners, just ahead of Russell Payne.

Julie Scholefield and Emily Harris won the duet and Julie was second in the intermediate solo.

Youth orchestra members took the first three places in the children/beginners’ open duet. They were 1 Simon Waterfall and Ashley Miles, 2 Matthew Payne and Sophie Lovelock and 3 Heather and Joshua Croucher.
