Pete Doherty talks of emergency dash to GWH

TROUBLED Pete Doherty has revealed that his heart "stopped" and he was on a life support machine after being rushed to Swindon's Great Western Hospital.

The musician, who has battled drug addiction, cancelled a number of Irish shows last month which he had initially claimed was due to "exhaustion".

But the Babyshambles frontman has now admitted that he had been rushed to the GWH after suffering "poisoning" at his home near Marlborough.

In an interview with NME, he said: "If I hadn't been on a life support machine I'd have been in Ireland, but my heart stopped."

Doherty, who missed Babyshambles' shows in Dublin, Belfast and Galway, said drugs were not involved.

The wayward performer, who was recently fitted with another implant to keep him off heroin and cocaine, said he became ill at home, but remembers little.

"It was a really strange turn of events. Obviously, their (the doctors') immediate thought was that it was to do with drugs, but it wasn't - it was some kind of poisoning," Doherty said.

"What happened? Well, I don't know, I don't remember. At the time I thought I was a taxi driver offering to take everyone to Elephant And Castle. I was running into the walls, making steering wheel signs with my hands. And then I just stopped. My body just stopped."

Doherty, who recently performed in Cricklade, said: "I woke up and the doctors were asking 'Do you know your name?'. I said 'Yeah, Peter.' And they said 'Do you know where you are?'. I said 'Well, I'm in a hospital...'. It was like Twenty Questions."

The star said he was subsequently given the all-clear, but there are fears about his heart. The singer - who kicks off his first Babyshambles tour for two years next month - said: "They're concerned about my heart rate. I've always had a slight dickie heart, I was born with it. I'm fragile in there, you know?"

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of The Libertines but... is this really newsworthy?

I think not.

I like the 'suffered poisoning'.

These constant revelations are the only things keeping Doherty's otherwise moribund career 'alive'. I guess this has more to do with promoting his next tour than an interesting story about a much loved entertainer, huh?

People often dismiss Pete Doherty. IMHO he's one of the best musicians this country has produced this decade.

I bet a lot of his critics have never even heard his music.

What on Earth has Doherty's music got to do with him hogging the headlines all the time? Nowt.

Like being a critic of the man and his ethics is anything to do with what he plays anyway?

I've heard tracks by The Libertines and Babyshambles. MOR fey indie rock in my opinion. Some clever lyrics ocassionally - but nothing I've heard which justifies or even relates to the hype and the media coverage. As much as he's been medically hooked on drugs, I suspect he's as much in love with the addiction to the media which tales like this one give him...?

.... A tale indeed. Still, Pete's version is much more exciting than the real version, bless him. At least the drugs haven't claimed his sense of humour or imagination.

Over-hyped, over-rated very ordinary sloppy 'indie' music. He lives off his reputation as a 'bad boy' yet comes across as a complete knob who Keith Moon or Ozzy Osbourne in their heyday would have eaten for breakfast.

Nice one Scott!

Ozzy probably would have literally eaten him for breakfast.

Poisoning? Everyone I know at the GWH said it was a drugs overdose, but whatever keeps the PR bandwagon going I guess...

Also, this happened WEEKS ago - it may have been news then, but it certainly isn't now.

It's well known that Pete Doherty, infamous rock enfant terrible, former Libertine and all-round Babyshambles, is a big fan of Tony Hancock. However, up until today it was not thought he also shared a deep affinity with another much-loved British comedian. Namely, John Cleese. Because the shambolic star is reported to have angered most of Germany this weekend, when he performed a verse of the national anthem that was long ago shamed by its Nazi associations.

We decided to stop Peter Doherty's appearance onstage as quickly as possible", organisers Bayerischer Rundfunk explained in a statement after the singer was dragged away to a chorus of boos. His antics were broadcast live on Bavarian public radio and have understandably been met with outrage. He has made no comment about the furore but Chief Prosecutor Barbara Stockinger told local reporters the performance will be examined closely for possible prosecution. In a career chequered by jail terms and tabloid infamy, treason is perhaps the one thing Doherty has yet to be accused of.

Just the sort of "new" resident we all need huh ?
