Devizes charity applauds its backers

THE charity that runs the Nursteed Centre for disabled groups in Devizes has thanked the community for keeping its head above water.

The Devizes and District Association for the Disabled, which has run the Nursteed Centre for 25 years, had encountered major financial difficulties after roof repairs made a £40,000 hole in their coffers.

Chairman Maurice Came said: “We were concentrating so hard on the roof repairs that we didn’t appreciate how increases in heating and lighting were affecting our financial position. The bottom line was we were not able to balance our books.”

But a plea to the local community paid dividends. Grants came in from the local Freemasons for £2,000, from Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation for £3,000, from Devizes Town Council for £1,500 and from Devizes Lions Club for £600.

Then last Sunday, Mr Came picked up a cheque from the Wyvern Club in Church Walk, which had raised £525 for the Nursteed Centre from a variety of fundraising activities.

Mr Came added: “Thanks to all this help, we have been able to get through a very bad patch and we are now back on an even keel.

“Between 350 and 400 vulnerable people use our facilities each month and without the Nursteed Centre they would have no place to go.”
