Soldier run over by off-duty policeman

A soldier with a prosthetic arm was run over by an off-duty policeman just moments after being thrown out of a pub in Warminster for urinating in the pub’s courtyard.
The 33-year-old soldier, who is based in Wiltshire, was struck by a blue Vauxhall Astra travelling towards Frome, outside The Old Bell Inn at about 11pm last Thursday.
The manager at the Old Bell Inn, Chris Wright, said the soldier was thrown out just moments before.
He said: “He was in the pub drinking with his friends but was asked to leave when we caught him peeing in the courtyard.
“He wasn’t out of his head at all, he was just caught doing something he shouldn’t have been.
“He was then chatting to the door staff and the next thing we know there was a load of police outside “We had the police come in to speak to us and have a look at the CCTV.
“My guess is he wasn’t looking where he was going and got hit, but none of our staff saw what happened. It’s an unfortunate situation.
“I hadn’t seen him in the pub before, but he was easily identifiable because he had a prosthetic arm and was joking around waving it about and banging it on the table.”
The soldier suffered facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital, where he was released on Tuesday.
The driver of the Astra, who was an off-duty policeman with Wiltshire Police driving his own car.
The incident was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which has decided that the force can continue to investigate the matter.
Sergeant Craig Hardy of the Serious Collision Investigation Team is investigating the accident. He said: “The driver is now out of hospital but did sustain a number of facial lacerations.
“Once all the statements have been taken we will then decide what action to take, but this may take some time because of Christmas and New Year.”
