Arrest ordeal of Trowbridge man

Snooker star Stephen Lee has spoken of his ordeal after he was arrested in front of his wife and young children in connection with match-fixing allegations.

The 35-year-old, of Albany Close, Trowbridge, was arrested last Thursday at his home by West Midlands Police following a joint operation with the Gambling Commission into bets placed on him to lose.

He was taken to Birmingham for questioning and only released at 10pm with a train ticket from Birmingham New Street to Trowbridge.

“The police were awful in the way they dealt with me and my family,” Lee said.

“There were obviously no trains going out of Birmingham New Street to Trowbridge at 10pm at night and I had no money on me.

“I had to call a taxi driver friend of mine, Mike Dunford, who collected me at about 1am and I eventually got home at 4am.

“The justice system seems to be guilty until proven innocent to me. Everyone is painting this horrible image.

“There was a similar thing a couple of years ago when they brought me in for questioning.

“Nothing came out of it and the police didn’t even say sorry. That’s why I’ve got no time for them.”
