Good haul for Erlestoke prison

Staff at Wiltshire’s only prison swept the boards at Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board’s local justice awards in Devizes on Friday.

Eight of the individual awards and two team awards went to staff members engaged in prisoner education and emotional support.

Sarah Copp, a forensic psychologist and Jo Taylor, a ceramics teacher, Terri Duddy, partnership co-ordinator, and Christine Trafanowski, head of learning and skills, were nominated in the category of Working with Prisoners, while volunteer chaplain Sue Ascough was named Volunteer of the Year.

Mark Hartley, prison diversity manager, was nominated for commitment to diversity; head of finance Sharon Pearce and Tim Mozley, from the works team, got long-service awards.

Governor Andy Rogers was particularly pleased with the recognition for the prison’s psychological services, care and separation and education teams.

Mr Rogers said: “The education department in particular has been fantastically successful in reducing re-offending. People from other prisons are sitting up and taking notice of the work going on at Erlestoke Prison.

“I was also pleased for Mark Cole and his team at the care and separation unit. Although Erlestoke is a category C prison, we house some dangerous individuals, and it is testament to the team that there is no trouble here.”

Ann Badminton, who worked as a temporary supervisor in the Witness Care Unit at Chippenham for five months last summer, was nominated in the category of Caring for Victims.

Dorothy Renfrew, a member of the Volunteer Referral Order Panel and “appropriate adult” for the Wiltshire Youth Offending Team, was another nominee for Volunteer of the Year.

Liz Berry from Salisbury Police Station won the overall award. DC Andy Fee of Wiltshire Police was nominated for Caring for Victims.
