Public meetings to be held over special needs school places

Wiltshire Council is holding public meetings to discuss proposals to close six specialist learning centres at primary schools for children with learning difficulties.

The centres are separate units in mainstream schools including Longleaze Primary School in Wootton Bassett and Malmesbury Primary School.

Wiltshire Council also plans to cut places at specialist centres that remain open resulting in a reduction from 306 places to 180, including 20 at Studley Green in Trowbridge and four at The Avenue Primary School in Warminster and King’s Park Primary School in Melksham.

Wiltshire Council say instead pupils will go to another specialist centre or into a mainstream classroom alongside pupils with non special needs.

The public meetings are being held on March 29 at Devizes School at 7pm, Sheldon School in Chippenham on April 21 at 7pm, Kingdown School in Warminster on April 22 at 7pm, Salisbury City Hall on May 4 at 7pm and St John’s Parish Church Centre, Trowbridge on May 7 at 10am.

Kids with special needs need excellent staff to support and teach them so these schools will need extra staff in to do this and hoe unsettling for the kids that will have to move schools.
