New Calne sports clubs look for helpers

Two new sporting clubs are coming to Calne and volunteers are needed.

Beversbrook Sports Facility is looking to establish table tennis and archery clubs.

Community football development officer at the club, Kevin Whitehorn, said: “The table tennis club would be based in the pavilion and the new community hall and is looking for volunteers to manage the club committee and to take the club forward, “Also, I am looking to launch an archery club at Beversbrook and again I will be looking to recruit helpers to manage the club to ensure sustainability.

“We want to work together to make Calne a sporting town.”

The table tennis club committee will hold its first committee meeting on Wednesday at 5.30pm at the sports facility to recruit the club committee and volunteers.

The first archery club committee meeting will be held on next Friday at 6pm. Anyone interested in helping out at either club should contact Mr Kevin Whitehorn on (01249) 814191 or email k.whitehorn@calne.gov.uk.

Table Tennis and Archery? Come on, really?

Don't get me wrong, I totally respect both sports but Calne needs to develop the core sports first surely.

If we want to make Calne a sporting town then lets start with some decent sporting facilities shall we?

Beaversbrooke only caters for a small sector and as I understand it's often too water logged to do that succesfully. Who wants to play 5 a side on a concrete pitch? Not me!

Then there's Calne Leisure Centre - for me it's never available, so I guess other people experience that too. When I want to play 5 a side I have to go out of town because the hall is never available. When I want to swim I want a clean pool where the lights are entact and there are no rusty fittings in the pool. When I want to work out I want a gym where I don't have to queue for the stations.

I admire the work done by the team who saved Calne Leisure Centre but the funding required to make it what Calne needs just isn't available.

Anyway, rant over - I'm off to Devizes for a game of footie!!
