From Trowbridge, another string to Toby's bow

Budding musicians competed for the coveted title of St Augustine’s Young Musician of the Year last week.

The Trowbridge school has been holding the contest for 19 years and regularly sees up to 90 students take part.

This year’s winner was 18-year-old violinist Tobias Tripp, who performed the first movement of a Haydn violin concerto in G.

St Augustine’s director of music Richard O’Mahony said: “It is wonderful to see them progress and develop and how they rise to the challenge in a concert hall.”

The event started with 89 entrants, with nine finalists each performing at Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon last Wednesday.

Tobias won £100 and a trophy and is planning to attend the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama next year after winning a scholarship.
