Ambulance and health staff admit to feeling the pressure

Staff at the Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) and NHS WIltshire say work pressure has increased.

A survey of NHS staff carried out for 2009 showed that in both organisations pressure in their jobs was worse than the previous year.

The results also show that GWAS scored lowest for staff job satisfaction and feedback and staff involvement. It scored best on percentage of staff appraised in the last 12 months.

NHS Wiltshire scored lowest for percentage of staff feeling satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they were able to deliver and opportunities to develop their potential at work.

It scored best on numbers of staff appraised and staff using flexible working options.

Suzanne Tewkesbury, NHS Wiltshire’s director of human resources, said: “We have put in place a strong foundation in terms of internal communications and a workforce development plan, including a robust appraisal process and access to training and development opportunities.”

A spokesman for GWAS said the trust had focused on improving mandatory training and appraisals and said it would look in more detail at the findings of the survey.

The survey was carried out for the independent Care Quality Commission.

A total of 315 staff from GWAS took part in the survey, a response rate of 46 per cent which was an increase from 39 per cent in 2008.

A total of 521 staff at NHS Wiltshire took part in the survey, a response rate of 66 per cent, down two per cent on 2008.

Yes, but are they actually investing money in more than just essential training? I doubt it! How many have time to do all essential training? How much induction do new staff actually get in these new-fangled community teams?!
But training in itself doesn't reduce the stress & pressures of working in the health sector ...
No it's unrealistic work loads; unachievable standards within the resources & time available, that are demoralising & never ending...
