Urchfont man dies after Devizes car crash

An elderly driver who was involved in an accident in Devizes today has died in hospital.

The 93-year-old man from Urchfont is thought to have suffered a medical condition as he drove along Nursteed Road just after 11am. His Peugeot car swerved across the road and crashed into a wall of Devizes School.

He was taken by ambulance to Wiltshire Police headquarters in London Road, Devizes, and airlifted to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. But died soon after.

His 94-year-old wife was taken by ambulance to hospital and treated for shock and minor injuries. The road was closed for a number of hours while police investigated. Witnesses are asked to contact the roads policing unit at Chippenham Police Station on 0845 408 7000.

What the hell was a 93 year old person doing in a car in the first place.

Lucky no one else was hurt in another car...
I guess this could happen whatever you age really... Very sad though.
Thoughts with family.

To respond to the first two extremely rude commentators. The man killed was my great-uncle. He was a lovely, gentle, highly intelligent and extremely competent man. He had a love of cars throughout his long life and was an engineer and aircraft designer during his career. He would never have gone behind the wheel if he did not feel able to do so. He also comes from a family with great longevity, so his death was not "inevitable". You clearly have nothing better to do than to spout your opinions on this website. Next time, stop and think who might be reading your insensitive comments.

Funny, I thought this column was about having 'your say'. I did. I stick to what I said, there is no way a person of that longevity should be behind the wheel of a car. Don't see how that is 'extremely rude'. Maybe insensitve for which I apologise. Fortunately on this occasion, those of us with better things to do weren't out there cleaning up the remains of a child.

Your web name says it all, you appalling person. Get a life.

Hey, don't salve your conscience by having a go at me. Could you have done more to prevent what happened? That's what family is about isn't it? Now toddle off and leave me to my opinions.

I refuse to get into a dialogue with you as you are obviously just a sad, uninformed idiot with nothing better to do. However, I will leave you with this. 1) I have no guilty conscience about the incident - it was nothing to do with me. 2) I am a mother of small children, so you being flippant about dead children is deeply offensive to me. 3) My sister was killed by an idiot driver - a young man, by the way. So, yes, I will toddle off. I have risen to your bait, but now must get back to my life and my nice memories of my great uncle. You have spoiled them with your disgusting comments (which I see you, or someone else, have removed from this site). Enjoy sitting at your computer, opining on other people's life to make up for your lack of one. Goodbye.

I'm getting bored with this now. Some final thoughts. My original post, which you clearly had removed, basically stated that I didn't think it appropriate that anyone aged 93 should be allowed to drive. It wasn't a personal attack on anyone's beloved uncle and it is an argument to which I stick. Perhaps I should regret having an opinion that is at odds with yours but I don't. Maybe, at some time in the future when you have learned that personal insult and hysteria are not effective ways to argue you will see that my original point is valid and will be borne out by the resultant RTI statistics that your Uncle's demise will generate. In conclusion I think my point would be that I wouldn't let my kids ride in a car driven by a 93 year old. I suspect that very few reading this post would either. Would you? Try and be honest with your answer. Now, where was I? Oh yes, having a life... and continuing to have my own opinions.

Blimey, nsc123, you're really got your knickers in a twist about what BotB said. Doesn't matter how kind or intelligent a person is they shouldn't be driving a car in their tenth decade. That's 23 years beyond when the government chooses to retest people! Very sad news for the family.

I am the family. I don't believe you can have read the original comment as someone removed it.

Whilst the website may well open up stories for comment, and we have a 'right' to air our views it doesn't necessarily mean that we should. Especially where feelings are raw.
