SWINDON Supermarine Ladies completed a remarkable treble at the weekend as they beat Swindon Town Ladies 2-0 in the Wiltshire Cup final.

Having already secured the Gloucester League Division One title with a 100 per cent record and triumphed in the Gloucester Cup, Marine saw off their local rivals with a goal in each half.

And manager Dave Smith was full of praise for his young troops, who only formed in 2008.

“It has been an unbelievable second season together,” he said.

“This result has capped it off. To comprehensively beat a team three leagues above and with half the Marine squad only 16 and 17 years-old, I feel the club has a promising future ahead.

“I would like to thank our sponsors, the Window Factory, for their support, and everyone connected to the club.”

A nervous-looking Town Ladies failed to make any impression in the opening exchanges, but created the first chance midway through the half when captain Kim Reeves headed a corner wide under pressure.

With Kayleigh Smith and Robyn Levett controlling the middle of the park, Supermarine looked more dangerous and it was no surprise when they finally broke the deadlock on 40 minutes.

A superbly-weighted corner from Belle Martin was met by the unmarked captain Michelle Brown, who powered her header past the Town keeper.

It gave Marine a slender lead going in to the break, and they continued to dominate after half-time thanks to the defensive efforts of skipper Brown, Sam Quinn, Stacey Long and Abi Curtin.

Town went close from a free-kick just outside the box, which was put over the bar, but on 70 minutes Marine showed them how it was done when Michelle Rich fired home a 25-yard free-kick of her own which gave the keeper no chance.

With time running out, Town forced Marine keeper Jodi Steenaart into a superb one-handed save to maintain her side’s clean sheet and they held firm to lift the cup.

Supermarine are on the look out for new players next season and also want to run a reserve side. Anyone interested in getting involved with the club should call manager Dave Smith on 01793 523469.
