POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road accident on the A4361 yesterday afternoon, in which a motorbike rider died.

A Honda CBR600 motorcycle was being ridden south along the road between Wroughton and Avebury, and while negotiating a sharp right hand bend collided head on with a Honda Pan European motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.

Police officers and paramedics were called to the road near the Berwick Bassett junction at around 2.20pm, but the driver of the Pan European motorbike died at the scene.

The rider of the Honda CBR 600 was air lifted to Frenchay Hospital with serious injuries.

PC Lucy Deacon said: "Police are appealing to any person or any witnesses to contact the serious investigation collision team at Amesbury.

"They are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of a light coloured BMW motorcar who may have been overtaken by a motorcycle just prior to the collision."

Anyone with any information can contact Wiltshire Police on 0845 4087000.
