Wootton Bassett mayor presents trophy to Brinkworth sisters

Young pianists Yuriko and Akane Gonda, of Brinkworth, were presented with the Mayor’s Trophy in Wootton Bassett last Thursday.

The award follows the sisters’ performance of Spring, by Komoti, a Japanese composer, at the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival when Mayor Mary Champion was so impressed that she invited them to visit the Mayor’s Parlour.

Yuriko, 12, and Akane, 10, began learning to play the piano about six years ago, at their home in Japan. Since arriving in Wiltshire, where their father works for Honda, they have had lessons with Mary New of Purton, who joined the family and Festival chairman John Davies at the presentation.

Yuriko is in Year 7 at Wootton Bassett School, where Akane will join her from Longleaze School in September.
