The charity Alzheimer’s Support is seeking volunteers to help bring Singing for the Brain to Marlborough in September.

Alzheimer’s Support Wiltshire is an independent charity that is teaming up with the national Alzheimer’s Society and Wiltshire Council to launch the singing groups that help people with dementia to communicate through music.

Alzheimer’s Support’s development manager Stephany Bardzil said: “Singing for the Brain is more than just a singalong.

“The groups offer a real workout for the brain, as well as a social opportunity for people with dementia and their carers.

“The sessions are led by a trained facilitator and the material is carefully chosen to include familiar and less familiar songs and rhymes, with plenty of call and response, singing in rounds and harmonies.”

Mrs Bardzil said people with memory loss often recalled songs long after other memories had faded. “We want to build on that amazing ability to communicate through music,” she said.

The group will meet at Kennet Valley Hall in Lockeridge on Thursday mornings from September 23. Volunteers are needed to help run the groups, to sit with the singers and to serve refreshments.
