SWINDON’S Carla Dunne is celebrating international glory after winning a bronze medal in patterns at the World Tae Kwon-Do Championships in South Korea.

The 22-year-old, who is now based in Paignton, told the Advertiser: “To be third in the world, I’m really chuffed.

“Before the event I was hoping for a medal placing, but when I got there the standard was really high and I was hoping just to get through the first round.

“So I was really pleased to go all the way through to the medal places.”

Dunne, who was competing in the world championships for England for the first time, having turned out for Wales previously, added: “I’m aiming to win the world championships next time.”

More than 50 nations took part in the event, which was held in an arena purpose-built for tae kwon-do, and England’s 60-strong team finished top of the medals table.

The national squad had trained for several months at the Oasis prior to the competition.

Dunne won a silver in patterns at last year’s European championships and has just started her own tae kwon-do school.
