Calne teenager James Burgess, appeared before magistrates on Friday charged with driving a quad bike without insurance or a licence on a bridleway.

Burgess, 18, of Dixon Way, was caught by police on a bridleway by a Hills recycling quarry on May 10.

He pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, without insurance, and without lawful authority, and was fined £315 in total. He also received six points on his licence. He was with Jordan Sweetlove, 18, of Ogilvie Close, and Rory Mackenzie, of Newcroft Close, and all three have now been dealt with by the courts.

The teenagers separated when they saw the police, but with the help of a police helicopter and units from Chippenham and the MoD, all were arrested.

Sweetlove received an interim ASBO immediately after the offence, and was recently given a full two-year ASBO.

Sgt Phil Connor said: “Our concerns were that this ongoing problem was either going to result in a serious, if not fatal, accident with those young people causing danger to themselves, to members of the public and to employees of Aggregate Industries.”

Quarry manager Ben Dormer said: “Quarries look like attractive places to play for youngsters but there are many different dangers with the equipment, the machines and the vehicles we use.

“We have a duty of care to everyone who uses this site.”
