Gurkhas will be out in force to line the path to Malmesbury Abbey on November 14 for Remembrance Sunday.

This year’s celebrations will also include the 50th visit of the Wroughton Silver Band who will be performing a special concert at the abbey on Thursday November 11 at 7.30pm.

Derek Tilney from the Malmesbury and Sherston branch of the Royal British Legion said Gurkhas from Buckley Barracks wanted to be involved.

He said: “I have more Gurkhas than you can shake a stick at. We’re delighted to have them. They will be lining the path to the abbey.”

He added that over the years the town had forged a strong relationship with the Wroughton Silver Band.

He said: “Fifty years is a long time. We have built up a very good friendship.

“As the concert is going to be on November 11 we will also have a short service of remembrance.”

Also attending the Malmesbury remembrance celebration will be Chelsea pensioner David Oie, an inpatient at the Chelsea Royal Hospital for former soldiers.

Mr Tilney said: “He is an old soldier and a Malmesbury boy so we’re very glad to have him visiting us. At this time Chelsea pensioners are in demand.”

All funds raised at the November 11 concert will be going to the Poppy Appeal.

The Sunday November 14 civic service at the abbey will start at 2.30pm.
