The introduction of radios to the Chippenham Pubwatch scheme means that there will now be less chance of late-night trouble in the town.

Members of the scheme have now been given two-way radios by the Area Board to communicate with each other on busy evenings.

It is hoped this will stop those who have been asked to leave premises moving on to another pub in the area.

The chairman of Pubwatch and manager of the nightclub E11even in Chippenham, Craig Meikle, said: “If a person has been kicked out of one place, the door staff will be able to get on the radios and warn other places in the town.

“We already call each other on our mobiles, but this is going to be much more effective in dealing with trouble-makers. We are hoping to nip any trouble in the bud.”

A trial period is has been underway since Christmas Eve, with door staff from E11even, Jax and the Brunel testing the radios.

Door staff in other night spots on the Pubwatch scheme will be given the radios this week.

Staff manning the CCTV in the town will also be given one of the radios to allow them to communicate with the pubs and clubs.

PCSO Barbara Young said: “One of the police officers working in the evenings will also have a radio on them to communicate with door staff.

“If there are any problems, then the police will intervene, but this is primarily a scheme for the pubs and clubs. They manage Pubwatch themselves with minimal police interference.”

There are currently 19 individuals on the Pubwatch list.
