DAVE Clayton hailed Melksham Town ’s win at league leaders Gillingham Town last weekend as a pivotal result in their season.
Defender Luke Smith and top scorer Gary Higdon put Melksham ahead before midfielder Josh Robinson missed the chance to put Clayton’s side 3-0 up from the penalty spot.
Ryan Murray’s long-range free-kick crept in and pulled a goal back for the hosts, who had Ben Salem sent off for a second bookable offence late on, but Melksham held on to close the gap at the top of the Toolstation League First Division table to just a point.
“They had a lot of the ball but I thought we were better in the areas where it mattered – that was in the defence and attacking,” said Clayton.
“That could be a result that will help decide where we finish this season.
“They took on board the lessons from last week (a 4-3 loss to Shrewton United in the Wiltshire Senior Cup) and defended much better.”
Third-placed Melksham have two games in hand on Gillingham but second-placed Cadbury Heath, who are level with Clayton’s men on 47 points, have played two games less.
Melksham face Roman Glass St George tomorrow.
