AN elderly woman had to be cut free from her car following a crash on the A36 last week, just two days after a couple were killed in a crash near Upton Lovell.
Warminster fire crews cut the top off her Volkswagen Golf as it was suspected she had back injuries after the collision near Heytesbury on Thursday, at about 6.30pm.
The woman, who suffered a broken leg, was taken to Salisbury District Hospital.
The other driver, whose Vauxhall Zafira was overturned, was uninjured.
Two days before, Upton Lovell residents Althea and Antony Barrington-Brown were killed in a collision with an aggregates lorry.
An HGV driver, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Wiltshire Times that while lorry drivers may be reluctant to take the route, they are encouraged to do so by employers.
“I don’t feel comfortable going down the A36,” he said.
“People try to overtake in stupid places, no one wants to be stuck behind a lorry.
“But it is quicker than going up to the motorway and costs less in fuel, so we are told we will be disciplined if we take a safer route.”
A Highways Agency, spokeswoman said between January 2006 and December 2010 there was only one serious injury collision and four slight injury collisions on the road between the Wylye and A350 junctions.
She added: “The only safety work we have proposed for this section of the A36 is additional warning signs for traffic turning at the junction with the B390.
“We will continue to monitor incident data, and make adjustments to our programme if necessary.”
