Frozen pitches were the order of the day in the Trowbridge Windows & Conservatories sponsored Trowbridge and District League on Saturday, with not a single ball kicked as all ten scheduled fixtures falling foul of the elements.
Despite losing the complete fixture programme for the first time this term due to the weather and after a two-week Christmas break, the majority of the League’s teams have completed 50 per cent of their fixtures and a handful of sides have just a few matches left to play.
Division One
Division One leaders Melksham Town have four games to play from their 18, while second-placed Trowbridge Wanderers, who are two points behind them have played two fewer.
Westbury United Reserves are in third spot with a game in hand on the leaders and all three sides are due to miss out again this weekend.
Freshford United, who are playing catch-up having only played ten games, are in action but not in the league as the villagers continue the defence of the Somerset Cup with a trip to Yeovil & District League side Keinton Manderville.
Semington Magpies travel to Bradford United and Broughton Gifford, who are desperate for points will be welcomed by a Castle Combe side who are hoping to claim a top five finish in their return to the top flight.
Division Two
In Division Two all but two sides have completed three quarters of their games and had Heytesbury not seen their game with runaway leaders Boomsbury wiped out, they would have become the first side to complete their 18 match league campaign.
Second-placed North Bradley, who are on the road at bottom of the table FC Northbridge this weekend, will send their hosts to Division Three with a victory.
Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves host promotion hopefuls Warminster Town Reserves next Saturday, in what will be Wanderers penultimate game of a season and chould see them just beat the drop.
Holt, who are stuck in the bottom two, need to beat leaders Boomsbury in their final game in three weeks' time if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation. Calne Eagles entertain Bratton this weekend, in the only other fixture in the division.
Division Three
Trowbridge-based Lamb FC top Division Three by eleven points and are ahead of Westbury Town, who have played one less game that Richard Stevens' side.
The teams go head-to-head at Bratton this Saturday in what is a must-win game for hosts Westbury, if they are to have any chance of beating their guests to the title.
Basement side Polenez Westbury, who have lost all 13 of their games to date, will have the welcome mat out for The Stiffs, for whom it will be their penultimate game of the season.
Fourth-placed Westbury United A lock horns with third placed Melksham Town A - both sides are level on 28 points but with Melksham having two games in hand on their hosts, it is Wesley Frith’s visitors who look set to finish the higher of the league’s newcomers when the season reaches it’s climax.
Westwood Social Club, with six games remaining, can’t wait for the season to end, but with a home game with United FC awaiting them this Saturday, Ben Cowdrey’s side should claim a few more points in what could be their final season in the league.
Both Bratton Reserves and Bradford United Reserves can look forward to another blank weekend as neither team have a fixture.
