THE search is on for girls to become Swindon royalty for this year’s Old Town Festival.
The Old Town Festival Committee is looking for a carnival queen, aged between 13 and 16, and a princess, aged 11 to 12, to star at the event in June.
The contest takes place on March 7 at Commonweal School from 7pm and is open to any girl who lives in or goes to school in Old Town.
Josie Williams, the community arts development officer at Commonweal School, said: “There will be two rounds. Round one is casual wear, but strictly no denim, and an interview with the compere.
“Round two is evening wear and you will be asked to perform a short piece in dance, music, drama, poetry, juggling or tell a few jokes.
“Round one carries up to ten points for personality, up to ten points for natural beauty and up to ten points for caring for others.
“Round two carries up to ten points for quality of performance and up to ten points for poise and stage presence.”
The Miss Carnival Princess competition is open to any girl who lives in or goes to junior school in Old Town .
The Miss Carnival Queen competition is open to any girl who lives in Old Town or goes to school at Commonweal, Churchfields or St Joseph’s.
The winning girls will attend the opening event on March 23, be guests of honour at the ‘70s dinner on June 22, be chauffeured in a vintage car as part of the procession on June 23 and help with the collection tins on June 16.
Last year, Summer Andrews, of Ferndale Road, was crowned carnival queen and Saskia Kevern, of Gorse Hill, scooped the title of carnival princess The Old Town Festival committee is also looking for singers, choirs, dancers, bands, duos and performers to take part in the festival on June 16 and 17.
Acts are also needed for the Commonweal Community Performing Arts Marquee on June 23.
Auditions for festival performers will take place on February 29 at The Vic pub, in Victoria Road.
