ASH Edenborough admits he’d be quite happy for Supermarine’s visit to Leamington tomorrow to be postponed, after his partner gave birth to their second baby.
Snow was due to fall in the Leamington area late last night and in the early hours of this morning, meaning it is highly unlikely that the Southern Premier clash at the New Windmill ground will go ahead.
And while many non-league footballers will busy themselves with an afternoon in front of Soccer Saturday in the absence of a game, Edenborough will instead find himself tasked with caring for a newborn.
The striker and his partner Kerry O’Brien, both 25, arrived at Great Western Hospital at around 10pm on Wednesday night, and Joshua James Edenborough was duly born at 1.56am, weighing 9lb 5oz.
It was an easier job than when the couple had their with first child 20 months ago, when Edenborough was at the forefront as daughter Frankie arrived in the world.
He explained: “Last time I was right in there helping because Kerry was struggling a bit, but this time it was all good.
“I was there giving her moral support and it all went well and both of them are healthy.
“We could do with the game at the weekend being called off and it does look like it will be.”
Edenborough’s club and his fellow teammates took to twitter yesterday to send their good wishes to the forward, who is nicknamed Stretch.
@SupermarineFC tweeted: “@Stretch86A ... Congratulations to all from everyone at @SupermarineFC.”
Marine players Bradley Gray and Tom Cole were also among those wishing Edenborough well.
Meanwhile, Chippenham’s visit to struggling Hemel Hempstead tomorrow is in major doubt, but at least the club can console themselves with the knowledge that they have a new midfielder on board.
Richard Evans, a 28-year-old ex-Newport County man, made his debut in the 3-1 defeat to Bashley in midweek after signing from Welsh Division One outfit Aberaman Athletic.
Evans has spent much of his footballing career in Wales but said he was delighted to join an English club.
“I think it’s a little bit better standard of football over here, so it was a good opportunity to get involved,” he said.
”It’s a good team with a good fanbase.”
Elsewhere, Cirencester’s meeting with Brackley looks highly unlikely to go ahead, but that makes no difference to sidelined skipper Richard Mansell, who is recovering from knee surgery.
Mansell has been seeking inspiration from an England rugby legend as he makes his comeback.
“I got the Jonny Wilkinson autobiography for Christmas and that has been an inspirational read,” he said. “The dedication he has shown to comeback from all his injuries has been unbelievable.”
