HORSE RACING: Nicky holds All The Aces

IT USUALLY takes a smart sort to win the Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle at Huntingdon today, and Nicky Henderson’s All The Aces falls into that category.

Smart on the level for Michael Jarvis and Roger Varian, he is not among Henderson’s best crop of novices but is still pretty useful.

Second to Prospect Wells on debut, he then beat Champion Bumper runner-up Destroyer Deployed before finishing a respectable third to Montbazon last week.

Red Inca (9/2) ridden by local jockey Felix de Giles cruised to victory in the Walford & North Shropshire College Maiden Hurdle at Ludlow yesterday while Swindon jockey Wayne Hutchinson was third in the same race aboard Flying Phoenix.

A run-of-the-mill handicap hurdle at Ludlow had huge consequences for in-running and outright punters thanks to the 100-1 winner Tayarat.

Michael Chapman’s gelding, who had been well beaten in sellers on the Flat and over hurdles this month, finished tailed-off at Market Rasen on Sunday but ended up making every yard of the Henley Hall Gold Cup Handicap Hurdle.

A first winner for amateur Alice Mills, Tayarat was challenged by J'Adhere on the run-in but pulled away again to score by two and a quarter lengths.
