Bank customers in Wiltshire faced delays transferring money in and out of NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland accounts this weekend due to a computer failure.

NatWest’s Chippenham, Devizes, Trowbridge and Warminster branches were among 1,200 across the country opened on Sunday for the first time, and today (Monday) have extended opening from 8am-7pm.

Although technical problems have been largely resolved, they left many account holders out of pocket with wages unpaid, while house buyers were left unable to complete on purchases.

Customers have also been unable to access their accounts online.

RBS group chief executive Stephen Hester apologised to customers on the NatWest website.

He said: "The problems of the past few days have caused disruption and inconvenience for our customers as well as for many customers of other banks.

"I am very sorry for the difficulties people are experiencing. Our customers rely on us day in and day out to get things right, and on this occasion we have let them down. This should not have happened."

Other Wiltshire NatWest branches, in Corsham, Marlborough and Melksham, are open as normal.
