A group of teenagers from Calne are gearing up to host their first ever extreme sports competition.

The King of the Bowl will see skaters, BMX-ers and scooter fans flaunt their skills in the bowl in the bowl in Station Road.

The competition was set up by Skate Scoot Wiltshire, a fledgling company run by teenagers Ellis Welch, of Isis Street, and Tyler Shurmer, of Silver Street.

The 16-year-olds are both music technology students at Wiltshire College, in Chippenham, and this is their first foray into skate competitions. They are being helped by pal Jacob Weaver and Calne youth worker Will Kay.

They are on the lookout for the most outlandish trick in Wiltshire.

Ellis said: “I think everything is nearly ready, there are still a few things to sort out.

“We are looking for the best trick in each of the sports and there will be separate prizes for each of the age groups.”

The youngsters have been generating lots of interest on social media and expect there to be around 75 competitors and many more spectators on the day.

The event is being supported by Calne Town Council, as well as ATBShop in Swindon, which will be providing the prizes.

The bowl is due for a renovation next year and many of the skaters who use it are helping to raise £5,000 towards the overall cost by bag packing at Sainsbury’s and other fundraising events.

Ellis’s direct involvement in the competition has been threatened by a slight setback – his right leg is in a plaster cast.

He said: “I came off my scooter a few weeks ago and chipped the bone on both sides of my ankle.

“Hopefully I will be fine by the time of the competition.”

King of the Bowl takes place on July 28. Registration is open from 10am and the event starts at 11am. Entry costs £3 per person and helmets are compulsory. For details, visit www.scatescootwilts.co.uk
