A COMMUNITY garden which is being built in Wroughton is making flying progress.

An unloved patch of grass, which runs alongside the A4631 Devizes Road between Barrett Way and Wroughton Working Men’s Club, is being transformed into a vibrant garden thanks to a £40,000 grant.

Aeroplane shaped seats, which are carved out of wood, were installed this week, meaning work is almost complete.

Brian Tildesley, chairman of Vision For Wroughton, said: “We decided additional seating in the garden should be sculpted out of wood to resemble an aeroplane because of Wroughton’s connection with the RAF, particularly during the war years.”

The garden, funded through a Community Spaces Big Lottery grant, is expected to officially open in September.

The area is used for the village’s annual duck race but has been redesigned so it it will no longer be just a drab cut-through the rest of the year.

“Once we have got the aeroplane seats in we have just got the planting left to do,” he said.

When the garden is finished it will include flowerbeds, including a sensory bed for the visually impaired, natural seating around a garden area, butterfly and bee beds to encourage wildlife and a small number of fruit trees.
