BOWLS: Bassett close to Worthing win

WOOTTON BASSETT came close to ending Wiltshire’s seven-year drought at the Men’s National Bowls Championships at Worthing.

The trio of James Nobbs (sub for Chris Cheesley), Neil Smith and Gray Morphet enjoyed a tremendous run in the National Triples Championship but were beaten 25-10 in the final on Saturday afternoon by White Rock BC, Hastings skipped by Shaun Godfrey.

Bassett had reached the final with five victories and then in the semi-finals edged past Blackheath and Greenwich, skipped by England international Andy Thomson, 25-23 on an extra end. While in their semi-final Hastings had come back from 18-10 down to beat Cove, Hants, 19-18 and book their place in the final.
