TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Welton Rovers 0 Westbury United 3

WESTBURY raced into an early two-goal lead and completed the scoring at the end of the match, but were indebted to goalkeeper Lewis Porter who made a series of excellent saves.

The opening goal came after four minutes when, after Matt Mead had already put in a few dangerous crosses from the right wing that went unrewarded, Dave Percival delivered an equally fine ball and Rovers defender Greg Dando sliced it into his own net.

United doubled their lead on 10 minutes as David Whyte played a long ball which Mark Young chased down and, one on one with home keeper Chris Blammon, Young finished powerfully.

Porter made his first save a few minutes later when Andrew Keen fired an 18 yarder which Porter parried away and then, after a quiet period of play, Welton put together a fine move which ended with Patrick Doyle hitting a 20 yard shot that Porter did well to stop.

Nathan Hallett went close to scoring a third for Westbury on the half hour when he latched onto Bobby Mitchell’s through ball and hit a fizzing shot that Dando cleared off the line.

Play switched to the other end and Lewis Parker ran past two United defenders before bringing another save out of Porter.

Ryan Baggs broke forward before the break to almost treble his side’s lead but firstly saw his cross-shot tipped over by Blammon who then tipped Baggs’ 25 yard curler wide from the resulting corner which had been taken short by Mead.

United started quickly after half time with Mead shooting wide and a low cross by Hallett narrowly eluding Young in the six-yard box, however much of the second period was one-way traffic as the hosts piled on the pressure.

A goalmouth scramble led to Jack Metcalf forcing Porter into a point blank save then Baggs did well to block a Doyle effort.

Andrew Catley began to pull the strings for Rovers as they sought a way back into the match and he had a 20-yard shot saved by Porter before crossing to Keen whose powerful header was superbly parried by the Westbury keeper! Keen then took a 25-yard free kick that flew low and inches past Porter’s right hand post.

Having kept their lead intact United put the finishing touch to their victory in added on time when Luke Stanley’s set piece fell to Blakeman who headed against the post before pouncing on the rebound to complete the scoring.
