Devizes Carnival came to an end with a wonderful display of costumes and floats in the procession on Saturday night.

The procession embodied the community spirit in and around Devizes with young and old having fun.

After months of work on their costumes and floats the entrants gathered on The Green in the late afternoon. There was warm sunshine and a nice cooling breeze.

Such is the reputation of Devizes Carnival that groups from outside the town take part.

The furthest away this year was Southern Starlights majorettes from Bognor Regis in Sussex.

Leader Zoe Clark said: "This is our first time at Devizes Carnival, we heard about it on the internet. We go to about 60 events a year including many carnivals and Devizes is pretty amazing compared to some."

The Pig and Whistle pub in Melksham had an impressive float called The Wild West, made by regulars.

Landlord Tony Dobbin said: "We began making the set in April. We take part in Melksham, Devizes, Pewsey and Trowbridge carnivals. It's all good fun."

There were a few entrants who had chosen the Olympic Games as a theme.

Brothers Mark and Nick Green, of Devizes and Potterne, had a supermarket trolley each and were practising for a new event in Rio 2016 - the 100 metres trolley dash. In Mark's trolley was his four-year-old daughter, Chloe, while Nick had his son, Jake, nine, in his trolley.

Ken Chivers, of Devizes company Chivers Coal, who has been involved with the carnival for about 60 years, and his family and friends had a hilarious float called Sync or Swim? featuring people dressed in swimming costumes and attempting to move in time to music ranging from Chariots of Fire to Benny HIll.

Mr Chivers' daughter, Penny Stanley, said: "Our theme has a bit of a twist in that it's unlikely to be synchronised! After a couple of times practising we couldn't get off the floor. We always try to do something amazing that makes people laugh."
