MoD Corsham salutes the Battle of Britain

This Is Wiltshire: Salute to the few Salute to the few

Members of the Officers’ Mess at MoD Corsham commemorated The Battle of Britain on Thursday.

A Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby started the evening's events and made the most of clear blue skies with a superb display, which was followed by a sunset parade by 1304 (Chippenham) Squadron Air Training Corps.

The parade was then followed by a formal dinner with Air Vice Marshal Greg Bagwell, director of joint warfare at Joint Forces Command, as the senior guest and speaker.

As is tradition during the dinner, stories and personal accounts from the battle were read and Air Vice Marshal Bagwell gave a speech highlighting the significance of the battle in shaping the events of the Second World War.

I think old Neville Chamberlain was not as stupid as history would have us think. To Quote Google: "In At the time of the 1938 Munich Crisis (Peace for our time) , No 19 was the only squadron to possess any Spitfires at all" At the start of the Battle of Britain two years later the RAF had 27 squadrons of Hurricanes and 19 of Spitfires. The Battle of Britain fatally delayed Hitler's invasion of Russia - he was waiting to invade UK until the autumn, he then invaded Russia and wes faced by the General who defeated Napoleon in Russia, Generla Winter. If Chamberlain HAD faced up to Hitler, thene squadron of Spitfires would have lasted 5 minutes. AS it was, the Münich confernec and its resulting delay effectively won the war.
