The Parochial Church Council in Bromham is proposing to install new steps to make the journey to the church tower safer.
The existing steps at St Nicholas Church are narrow and steep tapered limestone steps, while the proposed new steps would be a stone staircase with a square landing at the top and bottom with steel hand rails and posts.
The PCC has submitted a planning application to Wiltshire Council.
In submission Chris Romain, agent for the PCC, says: “Regular access is required by bell ringers and for winding the clock. The steps are used by both young and old alike and the present arrangement of steps is unsafe.
“The new steps will not be attached to the existing structure but will be partially built over the existing steps.”
