THE community of Park South rallied together on Saturday to raise money for Susan Nicholson, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A family fun day was organised by friends and family at the Green Baize club to help raise the funds to fly Susan’s father to England from his home in Jamaica.

Susan, 47, was diagnosed with lung cancer three weeks ago when she went to hospital after suffering a mini stroke.

She had been complaining of headaches and a scan at the hospital showed that she had lung cancer that had spread to her brain.

Last week Susan went through a session of extensive radiotherapy but doctors have said she only had a few months to live.

She said: “It has all been a bit of a surprise and has happened so quickly. I was getting headaches and thought they were just migraines but the scan showed it was cancer.

“I am shocked by the turn out today. It’s amazing and I just want to thank everyone who has come and helped. It would mean the world to me to see my dad – no one wants a child to die before them.”

Many of Susan’s family and friends were at the fun day which had live music and a bouncy castle for the children.

Her son Malachi said: “We are trying to raise the money to get her dad over from St Catherine.

“It would mean the world to her to see him. It has been a great day and you can see the support for her, the community has really come together.”

A raffle was also held with a number of local businesses including Mitchell Cycles, The Co-op, Chic Boutique and The Spotted Cow, donating prizes.

Chris Shields, manager of the Green Baize, said: “I know Susan and our job is to do the utmost for the people who use the pub and today has been a brilliant day.

“You can see that the community has come together to show their support.”

There will also be a sponsored head shave on October 5 at the Moonrakers pub with tickets costing £5 each to go towards the cause.
