A controversial planning application for an office and vehicle depot on a green field site near North Bradley has been approved by Wiltshire Council.

Hitachi Capital Commercial Vehicle Services was given permission for the office building with commercial vehicle storage and space for cleaning and preparation at Bradley Road, opposite Meridian Business Park, last week by the strategic planning committee.

The plan was opposed by North Bradley Parish Council, which said it would encroach into the buffer zone between the village and Trowbridge.

Parish council chairman Roger Evans said: “I think it’s disgusting. We’re very angry and disappointed that the local people, the villagers, aren’t having a say and affecting a decision which only affects us.

“It’s the thin end of the wedge. It’s a big multi-national firm, using money and clout.”

Mr Evans said he thought there were plenty of other suitable locations nearby.

Hitachi, which has its Trow-bridge base in Canal Road, says it has outgrown that site and needs a new home to continue to expand, with the North Bradley site the only suitable option.

The new development will have a raised woodland to help maintain the boundary between urban and rural areas.

An estimated 50 jobs are expected to be created by the move in the next few years, bringing the total to about 150.

Jon Lawes, managing director, Hitachi Capital Commercial Vehicle Services, said: “The council was satisfied with our plans and affirmed the economic benefits for Trowbridge that comes with having a global business in the community.

“These benefits include future recruitment as we commit to jobs for local residents.

“We fulfilled all of the necessary obligations throughout the planning process and consulted members of the public.”
