FOOTBALL: United get on Sher footing (From This Is Wiltshire)

WESTBURY United chief Sam Gooding is hoping his side can carry on getting the basics right after they battled to a well-earned point against Sherborne Town on Tuesday evening.

Westbury fell behind to an early goal before Matt Mead levelled the scores 15 minutes in with a long-range strike.

Gooding’s men had to weather the storm in the second period and a spectacular save from goalkeeper Lewis Porter helped them maintain a share of the spoils.

“Sherborne are going well in the league so you’ve got to say that it was a good point,” said the United boss.

“They were dominating the game late on and we needed an absolute wonder-save from from Lewis Porter to hold on.

“But the team spirit and the work rate is brilliant at the moment and we’re getting all of the basics right – hopefully we can continue doing that.”

Last Saturday, Westbury booked their place in the first round proper of the FA Vase with a 4-1 second qualifying round victory over Romsey Town.

Gooding’s side fell a goal behind in the opening minute but Dave Percival’s penalty levelled matters 13 minutes in.

Mead combined with Luke Stanley before firing the hosts ahead and in the closing stages, Beau Blakeman netted twice to put the icing on the cake for United.

Westbury will travel to Hampshire to take on Wessex League Premier Division outfit Blackfield & Langley in the next round on Saturday October 13. Gooding’s side aren’t in action tomorrow but go to Calne Town on Wednesday.
