A CUB and Scout group in Bowerhill has been saved by new volunteers, who came forward to replace the outgoing leader.

Chris Broom is stepping down after 25 years with the group, which had faced closure if a replacement could not be found.

But, after reading about the search in the Wiltshire Times, Trowbridge couple Gary and Sue Cook have come forward.

Mrs Broom, who became involved in the fledgling group in 1986, when her son was a Cub Scout, said: “I’m really pleased.

“I’ve found someone to be Cub Scout leader and someone to be group Scout leader, which are two roles I’ve covered for quite a while, so I’m really pleased about that.

“They’re previous leaders that had had a bit of time out from Scouting and have decided to return, which is really really good.

“It’s positive for us. I feel happy handing over to someone who knows how to run a Cub pack. I was so excited when I received the email.”

Mrs Broom can now take a step back with peace of mind, knowing the 50-strong group of Cubs, Beavers and Scouts is in good hands.

Mrs Cook, 35, will become the Cub Scout leader, with Mr Cook, 32, as group Scout leader.

Mrs Cook said: “We were both involved in Scouting previously, with Melksham Scout Group, but, due to work commitments, we decided enough was enough and had to commit to work.

“Things have changed over the last few years, so we’ve decided to get back involved.

“We’re really excited to get back involved and get back camping, which we both enjoy.

“It’s just the children; they are there because they want to be and it’s a different experience. Once Scouting is in your blood, it’s always there.”

“It would have been a shame [if the group folded]. The group has done so well and Chris has been absolutely fantastic.

“The children will be sad to see her move on, but pleased for her that she’s taken that step. She’s given her life to Scouting.“ Mrs Broom will remain involved in the movement, in an administrative role.

She said: “It’s right for me to go. It’s the children we do it for and it will be sad to leave them.”

The group is still looking for leaders and committee members. Anyone interested can contact Gary Cook on 01225 766884.
