STEAMING beverages and tasty treats will be the focus of fundraising events across the town later this week.

Schools, pubs, cafes and banks are just some of the venues that are taking part in the world’s biggest coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday.

The Woodlands Edge, in Sparcells, is hosting a whole weekend of events for the cause, which starts with a coffee morning on Friday from 9am.

Manager Sheila Horner, said: “It is important to help raise money for charity, the customers and staff are very supportive and get very involved.

“We’re hoping to raise about £500 this weekend. We want everyone to join us and help us raise the money.”

Coffee and cakes will be sold in the morning, and music lovers can enjoy ‘rock n’ roll’ bingo in the evening.

Saturday will feature a live set from Replica, a local rock n’ roll cover band who will be performing various classics.

The weekend will be topped off with a Macmillan quiz night and raffle on Sunday, where customers will have the chance to win a range of prizes.

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer, providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support.

In 2011 the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning smashed its fundraising target and raised a record-breaking £10m, which helped fund the Macmillan team including therapists, nurses and support line workers.

Swindon Garden Centre, in Stratton, is inviting people to join them for coffee from 9am until noon.

Manager Lewis Fox, said: “We will be providing free tea and coffee and inviting customers to make a donation to the charity.

“We hope lots of people come along to the event and help us support this worthy cause.”

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, will be joining Swindon Barclays at 10.30am for their coffee morning, which will see staff donning their pinnies for a branch bake off to serve home-made cakes to customers.

The public are also invited to the Jurys Inn in the town centre from 9am until 11am and Blooms Garden Centre, in Wroughton, from 9am until noon.

Also joining the fundraising on Friday is the winner of the Great British Bake Off 2011, Jo Wheatley, who will be paying a visit to npower’s Swindon office.

And about 1,000 children will be taking part in a coffee morning at Lydiard Park Academy, as well as children from Oaktree Nursery and Primary School.
