Independent vows to recruit 300 more officers if elected as police commissioner

A former counter terrorism expert, standing as an independent candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner of Wiltshire, has vowed to recruit about 300 more officers, if elected.

Colin Skelton, of Salisbury, is a career civil servant, who has specialised in counter terrorist operations training.

He joins the Conservative candidate, Angus Macpherson, and Labour’s Clare Moody in putting their names forward for the November 15 election.

He said: “Wiltshire is dangerously short of police officers and has the lowest ratio of police to population anywhere in the country. This needs to be addressed.”

Is he also going to promise that every day will be the first day of spring as well?

Who cares, as long as he sorts out the mess this part of our emergency services are in!

Back in your box Donnyfly; until you use your real name your opinion matters not.

Anyone standing that has less political bias than the other options wins my vote, especially considering he has relevant experience.

"until you use your real name your opinion matters not"

What an odd thing to say!

My obvious reply would be... how do you know it's not my real name?

So you think by using your real name makes your opinion count for more - especially on a site where perhaps 99.9% of the users don't use their real name for varying reasons, and in a world where many people use alises and pseudonyms.

An opinion is an opinion irrespective from where it comes, so I suggest you get down from your high horse and treat all opinions equally.

That's not strictly true. Posting with your real name does not guarantee a sensible opinion. A good opinion from Humpty Dumpty could be influential.
Unless you are a celebrity, your real name is only known to a few so makes little difference.

@Dave Hegarty (if indeed that is your real name)

As an addendum to my response to your post I must say that you should really learn to differentiate between what is an opinion and what is a question. I'll give you a clue. What you deemed to be an irrelevant opinion had a question mark at the end thus making it a question, not an opinion. Do you see now how it works?

It's great to hear an independent voice. I fear the political parties will pressurise their candidates to meet Government targets and spin the statistics; the election finances are been biased in their favour. I hope Wiltshire Times will provide a suitable for forum for us to hear, compare and contrast between the independents.

How is being an expert in counter-terrorism relevant experience in being a county police commissioner?

Like his independance - but question his maths - where's he going to find the money? Wiltspol haven't yet reached the target saving of 20 million they were told to find in the need to balance the books.

An inarguable fact... I would suggest this 300 officers won't happen once he's had a look at the numbers.

How much information are these Candidates getting when making their promises? 300 would increase the officer numbers by 1/3. Don't get me wrong though, it's the independence that's still selling this guy for me.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, the whole concept of a Police and Crime Commissioner is flawed - too politicised - and pointless. Far better, I feel, for the office of Chief Constable to be locally elected and the successful, experienc
ed officer, given a large amount of autonomy.

Just as it was before government wanted to take control and exert political control over chief constables so they did the governments bidding.
