Two housing developments in Trowbridge have been presented with Town Enhancement Awards.

The former Usher’s brewery, now Usher’s Court, and the Prospect Place development on Timbrell Street were presented with awards by mayor John Knight on Monday.

Both buildings will display red plaques from the town council marking the prize.

The old brewery, completed in 2010, was converted by Newland Homes into 100 apartments and four shops.

Cllr Knight said: “The project has made a massive and very positive impact on our town centre.

“Ushers were a major part of the town for almost two centuries and everyone was keen to preserve a reminder of that proud heritage. We are now steadily transforming Trowbridge into a modern, vibrant market town.

“Newland Homes, bringing much-needed apartment living into the centre, is helping us to achieve our vision.”

Newland design director Jeremy Drew said: “We had to work to preserve the 1820 frontage and retain it as an integral part of a sympathetic design to meet 21st century tastes and needs.”

Selwood Housing’s development in Prospect Place includes 49 affordable homes and was finished in May 2011.

Cllr Knight said: “This award has been given by the town council in recognition of the success of the development, which is a landmark site, forming the western gateway into the town.

“A lot of thought and planning has gone into the design.”
