A civil servant from Warminster braved the 45C heat of the Afghan desert to ride 10km on a unicycle around Camp Bastion and raise funds for injured soldiers.
Michael Telfer, 21, who is based in Helmand Province with the Defence Support Group, took an hour and 45 minutes to complete the 10km ride, without falling off his unicycle or stopping.
He was raising money for the British Limbless Ex-servicemen’s Association (BLESMA), collecting sponsorship around the camp with posters and donation boxes.
He said: “Doing that distance on a mixture of sand, gravel and Tarmac, in the extreme heat without falling off, was extremely difficult. It was my personal challenge, but it was worth doing it for BLESMA.
“It took place on my day off and I had a great support team on the day, from my friends Gordon Alley, from Warmin-ster, and Joe Toye, from Chippenham, on bicycles.
“I also had a pick-up truck following me round, with plenty of water on board and snacks, and managed to get it finished before the hottest part of the day.”
Mr Telfer, who is due home from Afghanistan in December, is searching for a house in the area with his girlfriend Gemma Payne.
He works in Warminster and Tidworth.
