PLANS to close a major road in Swindon for up to 10 days for resurfacing work have been postponed.

Swindon Council had planned to close Victoria Road from Prospect Place to Cross Street on Monday.

But the work has been called off after Thames Water started emergency work on a sewer on nearby Devizes Road and found further problems that meant the closures could coincide.

The preparation work on Victoria Road will still take place this week and will include drainage improvements, during off-peak times with traffic restricted to a single lane controlled by ‘stop-go’ boards.

A council spokesman said: “We are very much in Thames Water’s hands at the moment. A new date for when we will close Victoria Road depends on how long Thames Water are carrying out improvements in Devizes Road.

“We are currently looking at the end of October, or the beginning of November.

“Fortunately, we hadn’t already started the resurfacing work because we wouldn’t have been able to stop once we had started.”

The closure will be between Prospect Place and Cross Street and the diversion route will be via Groundwell Road, Drove Road, Cricklade Street, High Street, Newport Street, Devizes Road and Bath Road and vice versa.

At the southern end, the road will be closed to through traffic at Bath Road, with access only for residents and businesses.
