The winner of the Wiltshire Young Volunteer of the Year award will be appearing on BBC Radio 1 tomorrow, to debate teenage access to smear tests.

Chantelle Jenkins was diagnosed with cervical cancer in December last year, and has dedicated herself to raising both money and awareness of the life-threatening condition.

She won the volunteer of the year title after spearheading a series of charity events in aid of Wessex Cancer Trust. She was named the winner in the 24 and under category at the Wiltshire Voluntary and Community awards last night, in a ceremony at the Corn Exchange in Devizes.

Chantelle set up a Facebook page called Togetherness We Will Fight to raise awareness of the disease and campaign to improve access to smear tests for all women, which now has over 1,600 likes.

She said “I feel we’re a forgotten generation the 18-25s because we haven’t been vaccinated, and don’t get smeared until we are 25”.

Following the ceremony last night Chantelle will now be featuring in a live debate on Radio 1, when she will be arguing for smear tests for women of all ages. The debate will take place during the breakfast show, with the newly-appointed Nick Grimshaw, between 8.15am and 8.40pm.
