Teenage songstress Sophie O’Donnell will have a night to remember this evening when she launches her first CD with a gig at the Bell by the Green in Devizes.

Sophie, 15, from Avon Road, Devizes, and a Year 11 student at St Augustine’s College in Trowbridge, will sing some of the ten numbers from So Far, produced by Mel Austin at his Beanacre recording studios.

It is just another step along the road to stardom for Sophie, who has been singing since she was nine. She said: “I was taught singing by Paula Boyagis when I was at St Joseph’s Primary in Devizes and then I learned a lot from Carole Berry at First Stages.

“I started writing songs when I was 12. The first ones weren’t very good but I’ve improved a lot since then.”

That is certainly true if early reaction to So Far is anything to go by. The Gazette’s reviewer said of it: “Lots of these songs really made me smile, with cute and clever lyrics and some really good vocals.

“It includes simple tracks, some more upbeat songs and several with very honest lyrics. While I wouldn’t say I liked every song, I found four favourite tracks, which for a set of ten is pretty good going.”

Sophie has appeared on stage numerous times, with First Stages, the Devizes-based youth musical theatre group, as well as with the Wharf Youth Theatre where she has appeared in Just So, and Devizes Musical Theatre, where she did Annie.

She has taught herself to play the guitar and will be accompanying herself on stage tonight.

Her parents, Emma and Paddy, and brothers Liam and James, will be among the audience at the Bell by the Green this evening and they are all hoping it is the start of something big.

Already Sophie has caught the eye – and ear – of New Forest record producer Duncan le Feuvre and will shortly be recording more of her songs with him.
