Trowbridge will take part in the trial of a new mobile phone app featuring shopping offers.

The TikTap app is a scheme where people can see the latest offers from Trow-bridge businesses and use their mobile phones in-store to redeem the deals.

Trowbridge was approached to take part in the 10-town pilot scheme by mobile technology firm 2ergo Ltd, after the town’s bid for Mary Portas Town Team funding was recognised as one of the most active on social media sites such as Twitter.

The scheme is designed and built by the same company which is behind the highly successful Orange Wednesdays cinema and restaurant loyalty and reward campaign.

Up to 50 Trowbridge businesses can take advantage of the technology on a completely free trial with no hardware or licence fees for the first year.

Consumers can download the TikTap app when it goes live in the next fortnight.

Users “tik” the offers which appeal and when in a shop can “tap” their mobiles over an electronic “pod” to redeem them.

Ellie Gill, co-ordinator for Trowbridge Town Team, which promotoes retailers, said: “The aim is to tell residents and visitors about the benefits of shopping locally and re-circulate local wealth while using the latest technology to create additional intelligence for retailers. “It’s a massive coup for Trowbridge. There’s huge enthusiasm for it and a lot of proactivity around it.”

The firm says 25 of the 50 free places have already been taken.

Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce has backed the plan and booked 10 places.

Organisers hope independent traders will take part.
