WESTBURY were in this match for around an hour when, with Wessex Premier League side Blackfield leading 3-1, they had a great chance to get a goal back, however the home goalkeeper saved and his team then ran away with the match to progress into the next round.
United were without two of their most influential players as Paul Beavers and Bobby Mitchell were unavailable and a late injury to Matt Mead restricted him to a place on the substitutes bench.
In truth though, Blackfield were by far the better team and could have been out of sight before half time.
Their wingers and strikers created many scoring chances and, had it not been for poor finishing and some good saves by Lewis Porter, the score would have been higher.
As it was the teams went into the half time interval tied at 1-1. Blackfield opened the scoring on six minutes when Ekow Elliott’s cross was headed against the crossbar by Kevin Gibbens and the ball fell to Alex Baloaccini who poked it over the line.
Paul Preston, Baloaccini and Kayne Daysh went close to doubling the lead, but Westbury drew level on 24.
After several attacks were undone by poor crosses, Joe Kirkpatrick sent in an accurate corner kick that Liam Richards got a touch to before the ball diverted into the net off a defender.
United had a period of pressure where they worked openings in behind the home defence and Mark Young got on the end of a few fine moves ; firstly he crossed dangerously and forced Steve Mowthorpe to save well and he then ran onto Ryan Baggs’ fine pass only to shoot straight at the keeper.
TJ Cuthbertson and Baloaccini brought saves out of Porter before the break while Baloaccini and Preston sent efforts wide of the post.
Blackfield flew out of the blocks after half time and Daysh struck a 25 yarder against the crossbar with Baloaccini somehow putting his rebound effort wide.
They went 2-1 up on 50 when Gibbens set up Preston who made no mistake with a fine finish from just inside the box. Porter then stretched to catch the ball when Baloaccini got in one on one but he was helpless when the next goal went in on 55 minutes, Cuthbertson playing the ball inside to Gibbens and he had the time to turn and plant a low shot into the bottom corner.
United’s chance to keep themselves in the hunt came on the hour. Young’s run and cross set up Nathan Hallett who took a touch before striking powerfully and making Mowthorpe work hard to save. Then a few minutes later Mowthorpe did well to hold Kirkpatrick’s long range attempt.
Blackfield scored twice more in quick succession to round off their triumph. On 74 the ball fell to substitute Dominic Allen and he volleyed it past Porter.
Then a few minutes later confusion between Baggs and Porter allowed Gibbens to nip in and walk the ball over the line to make it 5-1.
Westbury tried their best to grab another goal in the closing stages but couldn’t work a way through the home defence, while Gibbens wasted a chance to score a hat-trick and Porter made the best save of the match to tip George Bowerman’s headed wide.
