TWO new signings might have been the talk of the Webb’s Wood Stadium before kick-off, but it was one of the existing crop who stole the headlines come full time in the Southern Premier clash against Cinderford.

Supermarine had recruited Swindon Town’s Samsung Win A Pro Contract winner Chris Smith in midweek and the full-back made his first start in the blue and white of his new club at South Marston.

Central midfielder Chris Taylor, part of the record-breaking Supermarine team that went all the way to the FA Cup second round in 2010/11, had also been brought in from Cirencester after a spell away that took him via Maidenhead, and he too was handed a starting berth by boss Dave Webb.

However, it was striker Ash Edenborough who pushed himself to the forefront of the Marine fans’ collective mindset, when he bagged the late goal that gave the hosts a narrow 2-1 victory.

However, the afternoon had certainly not always looked like panning out the way and it did not begin in the best possible fashion for Edenborough.

Scott Wilson put the visitors 1-0 up after 25 minutes and although Supermarine were awarded a penalty shortly after when Edenborough was felled, the same man ballooned from the spot.

After the break the home side began to get the sense that a positive result was still possible when stopper Kent Kauppinen saved a spot kick from Lee Smith after Kyle Lapham’s mistimed challenge, and sure enough, soon after the breakthrough came.

Front man Josh Parsons then stroked a free kick into the top corner after 56 minutes and with two minutes left on the clock, Smith’s cross was fumbled by the visiting stopper and Edenborough pounced from close range to give his side all three points.

“It was a good result because they had picked up a bit of form,” said Marine midfielder Rob Dean.

“We looked much better than in recent games, we passed the ball better and were in control of the game, even when we went 1-0 down.

“In the second half they were struggling to get out of their own half and I felt the second goal was always coming.”

Boss Webb added: “The level of performance from everyone was superb and the win should have been far more convincing than it was.

“We certainly deserved three points for the football we played.

“It was a fantastic free kick from Josh and Ash eventually got his reward for his display.”

Elsewhere in the division, two Marine old boys were on the scoresheet as Hungerford cruised to a 3-0 victory at Cirencester.

Luke Hopper opened the scoring at the Corinium in the 44th minute and then seconds before the break, Mark Draycott doubled the advantage.

That was how the score stayed until the 91st minute, when Hopper rounded off victory with his second of the day.

Meanwhile, Chippenham assistant boss Rich Fey felt there were plenty of positives to take out of the Bluebirds’ 0-0 Southern Premier draw with Arlesey.

The home side went down to 10 men late in the first half when skipper Scott Rogers was shown his second yellow card, but continued to dominate proceedings at Hardenhuish Park.

And while Fey admitted he was frustrated not to have defeated the Bedfordshire visitors, he had plenty of praise for the display.

“I thought that from start to finish, we were excellent,” he said.

“After we went down to 10 men, you would expect them to put a bit more of a fight up but I thought the fitness showed with the way we stuck at it.

“Josh Egan was outstanding, Dean Griffiths was outstanding and so was Scotty Lye, but it was just a shame we couldn’t get the goal that we needed.

“I thought Ben was excellent in goal and looked confident, and if that one goal had gone in, we would have won the game.”
