BOSS Dave Turner vowed pre-match that his Wootton Bassett side were going to enjoy the Wiltshire Senior Cup in 2012/13, and that prediction proved entirely correct on Saturday.

Flanked by a wonderful display from Shaun Terry that saw the forward bag a hat-trick in the space of a quarter of an hour, Bassett destroyed local rivals New College 7-2 in the first round at Rylands Way.

Josh Skeates had actually given the students the lead early on before Terry set about his goalscoring mission.

The experienced front man levelled matters with a super lob on 17 minutes and added another midway through the first period.

Terry's hat-trick arrived in the 32nd minute when he directed a terrific volley into the net from an Ethan Delaney cross, putting his side 3-1 up.

Mark Barnes added his latest in a long line of goals three minutes before the break and the match looked all but over at the halfway point.

A late inclusion following a warm-up injury sustained by Shaun Carter, Jack Ellis seized his moment by sending home the fifth after the resumption.

A Matt Bown penalty after 69 minutes only increased College's misery, although they did manage to pull a second back late on.

But the margin of victory was a convincing five goals as Barnes picked up his second of the afternoon in the closing stages.

Boss Turner said afterwards: "We played some terrific football but a lot of credit goes to the College lads because they never stopped trying to pass the ball.

"I like the way they go about it, but we were just a little bit too strong.

"Shaun's hat-trick was incredible and they were all very different goals.

"He's been playing well all year and I feel for him because he's now got a three-game ban that he definitely didn't deserve.

"My only frustration from the game was that we started slowly again, it's become a bit of a concern recently.

"I'd like to see us start a little bit quicker, because we haven't in the last two or three games.

"Other than the first 10 minutes we controlled the game and played some really good stuff, even though we had three or four out, which was really pleasing."

Elsewhere in the competition, Cricklade won 3-1 at Malmesbury courtesy of goals from Jack Allan (2) and Ben Carter.
