School choir to take part in Children In Need Event
PUPILS at Lydiard Park Academy are set to sing their hearts out as they join thousands to perform a song for Children in Need.
Eighty pupils from the school in Greendown and eight of its feeder primary schools will be joining another 170 students in the south west region to take part in the charity song.
Singer Aled Jones broke the news to the students last week that they will form part of a 2,000-strong choir made up of youngsters across the country.
Pudsey Bear visited the school during a choir rehearsal last week and the head of performing arts at the school, Laura Few, said that they were all a bit overwhelmed.
She said: “We are organising a choir of about 80 students in the Swindon area from Lydiard Park Academy and eight of our primary schools, who are then going to join with another 170 students from the Points West area.
“It is part of a national production in which are all going to be linked up next month.
“The school was contacted when BBC Points West picked up that some of our pupils had sung in the production of Swindon The Opera.
“When we realised how big it was it was a bit of a shock.
“I think the students are a bit overwhelmed, to be honest.”
Swindon will host the region’s live show at a venue that is yet to be announced on Friday, November 16.
Miss Few will have a key role in the show as she will conduct all the choirs from the south west and ensure they are kept in time with the other venues across the UK.
“We are in the process of teaching the whole song and I am going around all the primary schools to teach them as well,” she said.
“On the night I am going to be the choir master, so I have to direct all of them and get it in time with all the other choirs across the country.
“It should be a really good night but I don’t think the students understand fully what they are doing.
“We are really proud as a school to have been selected and to represent Swindon on the day.”
